Organization Profile.
The Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (SMEP) is the only professional society of metallurgical engineers in the country. It was established during the organizational meeting held in June 18, 1982 by its eleven (11) founding members: Dr. Eduardo M. Sacris (who would be later elected as the first SMEP President), Dr. Antonio M. Ostrea, Engr. Ernesto C. Ignacio, Engr. Romarico J. Platon, Engr. Jones R. Castro, Engr. David P. Cruz, Engr. Augustus C. Flores, Engr. Estefanio M. Gacad, Engr. Eli D. Lucas, Dr. Meliton U. Ordillas, Jr. and Engr. Alfredo F. San Miguel, Jr. The society caters to practicing Filipino metallurgical engineers from all areas of metallurgical practice (Mineral Processing, Extractive Metallurgy, Physical and Adaptive Metallurgy) and exists to promote the interests of its members and the profession and to disseminate knowledge in metallurgical engineering. The regular activities of the society include conducting of technical conferences (SMEP METCON is held once every two years), organizing of technical seminars and fora, and active linkage with allied engineering disciplines through membership in the Philippine Technological Council (PTC), the umbrella organization for engineering professional societies in the country. SMEP also organizes the oathtaking ceremony of passers of the metallurgical engineering board exam and actively searches from among its members those who can be nominated to the Professional Regulation Commission Award for Outstanding Metallurgical Engineer of the Year.
The roster of members of SMEP include primarily licensed metallurgical engineers who are eligible to become Regular Members. Graduates of the BS Metallurgical Engineering program who are not licensed as well as licensed metallurgical foremen may apply to become Associate Members. Student membership is also given upon application to any individual of good moral character who is interested in pursuing and benefiting from the objectives of the Society and who is at least fourth year Metallurgical Engineering student in any accredited school. Honorary membership may be conferred upon an individual of recognized ability and status, and who has, by voluntary action, contributed substantially to the attainment of the objectives of the Society.
